My very own office at work!
I’m am now about halfway through my internship with a not-for-profit tertiary school for Australian Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Islander students, and it’s AMAZING.
I’m learning so much about how organizations like this one are run given their limited resources and how much they depend on the communities that they are involved in.
Even better though, I’ve been able to bond with my coworkers, sit in on some of the classes (such as Applied Aboriginal Studies, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Advocacy, and Business Governance), and hang out with the students during breaks.
The students range in age from about 18-70 years old, and come from all over Australia, including Tasmania. Hearing about their experiences (some of them are members of the ‘Stolen Generations’) and what they are doing in their communities is so incredible, and I’m learning so much about their culture, which is exactly what I hoped for!
I think the best parts of this internship though have been hearing my boss and the students in these classes tell me how great it is that as a non-Indigenous person I’m actually interested in their culture and their well-being, and when they’ve thanked me for wanting to be a part of their communities and to help their communities.
Talk about feeling appreciated. :)
Wish I could stay here for longer!!!
In case you weren’t sure how to do it down under….
